S.E.D.A.T.E. is a structured 1-day course for dental and healthcare professionals involved in conscious sedation. The course combines an Immediate Life Support–equivalent session (SaILS) with a tailored sedation clinical update, providing a complete overview of safe sedation practice and emergency response in dental settings.

Course Format

Duration: Full Day (2 sessions of 3.5 hours)

Certification: CPD Certificate (7 hours total)

Interactive learning, practical application, and team-based simulations

Session 1: Sedation Clinical Update (3.5 Hours)

A focused update for dental professionals on sedation practice, clinical safety, and risk reduction. This session aligns with current sedation standards, including enhanced patient monitoring and emergency preparedness.

Topics may include:

·       • Behavioural management & medico-legal considerations

·       • Pharmacology of sedative agents (including Remimazolam)

·       • Patient assessment and ASA classification

·       • Safe and effective monitoring of sedated patients:
  - Pulse oximetry
  - Blood pressure
  - Heart rate
  - Capnography (ETCO2 monitoring)

·       • Recovery & discharge standards and documentation

·       • Recognition and management of sedation-related complications

Session 2: SaILS – Sedation & Immediate Life Support (3.5 Hours)

SaILS is an Immediate Life Support (ILS)-equivalent training session specifically designed for dental teams. It includes sedation-relevant emergencies and dental-focused airway management.

·       • Recognition of the deteriorating patient using the ABCDE approach

·       • High-quality CPR and AED use

·       • Airway management relevant to dental environments

·       • Sedation-related emergencies:
  - Syncope
  - Asthma
  - Anaphylaxis
  - Seizures
  - Cardiac arrest

·       • Use of oxygen and emergency drugs

·       • Team-based emergency simulations and scenario training

?? Note: Where all team members have a valid RCUK ILS certificate (within the past 18 months), the SaILS session can be replaced with a formal RCUK ILS course.
