Ensure your dental team is prepared to respond confidently to medical emergencies and first aid situations. This combined Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) and Medical Emergencies in Dental Life Support (MEDLS) course is tailored specifically for dental clinics and meets Care Quality Commission (CQC) expectations and GDC Development Outcome C.

Course Duration

1 Full Day (6 Hours CPD)
Includes theory, hands-on practical training, and continuous assessment.

Learning Objectives

Participants will:

·       • Understand the role and responsibilities of the first aider in a dental setting

·       • Demonstrate adult, child, and infant basic life support (BLS)

·       • Practice two-person bag-valve-mask (BVM) ventilation technique

·       • Use an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) effectively

·       • Administer supplementary oxygen safely in emergencies

·       • Recognise and manage dental-related medical emergencies including: Anaphylaxis, Epilepsy, Asthma, Cardiac chest pain, Diabetic emergencies, Choking

·       • Apply airway management techniques: Choking protocols (adult, child, infant); Airway-opening manoeuvres (head tilt–chin lift, jaw thrust); Use of oropharyngeal airways

·       • Provide first aid to casualties who are: Unconscious, In shock, Bleeding, Suffering burns or fractures, Experiencing eye injuries

Course Content Includes

·       • Principles of emergency first aid

·       • Primary survey and safe scene assessment

·       • ABCDE assessment and resuscitation steps

·       • MEDLS-based scenarios relevant to dental practice

·       • Hands-on use of AED, BVM, oxygen, and emergency drug administration

·       • Managing seizures, hypoglycaemia, and acute asthma attacks

·       • Control of bleeding, burns, fractures, and soft tissue injuries

·       • Legal, ethical, and record-keeping responsibilities

Assessment & Certification

Participants are continuously assessed through practical participation and instructor observation.
Successful candidates receive:
- Emergency First Aid at Work Certificate (valid 3 years)
- 6 Hours CPD Certificate (compliant with GDC Development Outcome C)
